Best of AITC & Author Signings 101. All the things you need to know if you're going to a Mega Author Signing.

Hello Bibliophiles!!

I'm fresh off my cherry poppin' author signing at Authors in the City and wanted to share a bit of what I learned in the event you decide to brave the fast and fun world that is an author signing.  I have to say, if Kayla wasn't the most well attended book signing attendee I know, I would have been completely lost.  Most of this she shared with me before my trip, the rest was learned the hard way...

1. Have backup!  This is the most important thing you can do since you will in some cases be so busy fangirling (fanboying?) over an author that you will forget a pic or a signature or something.  Have someone that can keep you focused and organized so you don't miss anyone on your list.
2. Be organized.  Know who you want to see, find out where they are located, what their lines are like and then plot a course.  Create lists an if available, get the chart of the tables so you know who you can group together.
3. Pre-order.  It's really the only way to guarantee you get the specific book you want so ask if you can pre-order or reserve a book so you don't feel rushed to get into a long line and take up valuable time waiting in a really long line (uh hem: KENDALL GREY!!)
4. Bring a rolling bag.  This will save you having to haul tons of tote bags all over the signing as some may get super heavy after you get your books.  It's also helpful to have a tub you can 'dump & run' with all the swag you take since you are usually trying to do 7 things at once when you finally ARE with that author.
5. Sustenance.  You will be waiting in line for some authors so it's really important to have a bottle of water and some non-crushable snacks so you don't pass out while waiting in line.
6. Respect your fellow attendees!!  Everyone there is also super excited to see these authors, don't cut into their time with an author just so that you can take a picture or ask questions.  When you wait in a long line to see an author it's crushing to have that time taken away by someone that doesn't respect that it isn't their turn.
7. You have more time than you think.  There were some authors that had lines for DAYS in the beginning but towards the end, they were all alone and had no one to talk to.  If tickets to that author are not being offered and you don't want anything more than a picture or a signature, come back later when the line is gone.  You'll have more 1-on-1 time with the author and might get some books they didn't sell and don't want to lug back home with them at a discounted rate (or FREE!!)
8. YOU ARE NOT THE INCREDIBLE HULK.  Remember that not only do you have to be able to store all these books you just bought, you might also be required to CARRY THEM.  In my case, after hauling them all over the signing and the hotel, I had to take them on the subway, NJ Transit, to my car, then to my apartment... I still don't know where they're going...
9. Remember to breathe.  This might be tricky at times but it's also very important.
10. Waterproof Makeup. Self-explanitory.
11. Wear good shoes. Cute shoes are for the after party and when going out places where you can sit around.  You DO NOT want to be standing on your feet for hours wearing 6" stiletto shoes.  You can only get away with that if you are a super cute author who sits for most of the event (Alessandra!!)
12. Bring your charger.  My iPhone would have been AWESOME to use at the event but after all the roaming, my battery was at half life before we got to lunch.  Hotels are required (by building code) to have a certain number of outlets per square foot to prevent a possible fire hazard.  Use them while you are waiting to see an author or take a break and recharge not only your phone but your energy.  It's a great time to eat that snack you packed!
13. Reassess.  If (or when) you are stuck waiting in a few long lines, double check your list and see who you MUST see before you leave and if you have the time to wait in what might be another long line.  Sometimes you have to take some people off your list to be sure you are not missing your required list of authors.  It's a good idea to know who will be at any other signings you are attending so you know who you can get to at another time.
14. Have fun!  You are in an environment where gushing over your favorite author and wearing a fan teeshirt is not only understandable, but appreciated!  My sister (a.k.a. my stunt double/backup) had not read a single book by any of the authors at AITC but thought it would be fun to go with me.  She wore my Killer Buzz Float teeshirt since I had my Jenn Foor sweatshirt on over my KTB tee.  Um... yeah, kinda didn't tell her what the books were about (sorry B!!) but we got stopped almost 30 yards after getting off the subway because 3 sweet women saw that shirt and said 'Cool! You're going to the signing too!' Not a single person I interact with on a daily basis would have seen that and had any idea what that shirt was for.  My mom thought it was a band teeshirt and was confused since she thought we were going to an author signing.  Oh, mom... Don't you know that authors ARE my rock stars??

Sassy Sara's AITC Awards:
My First Author: CD Reiss.  *sigh* was it as good for you as it was for me??
Funniest Shit to Happen to Me: Harper Sloan shoving a handful of condoms down the front of my shirt (I think she was trying to cop a feel!!)
Unexpected Crying: Julie Prestsater... Started crying when she signed stuff for me so I had something I didn't have to give away!!
Longest Line: I would have said Harper Sloan until I got in the line for Kendall Grey... That shit was the entire width of the room!  I would have waited in it twice to see her which is a good thing since I probably will when I see her in Boston :)
Coolest Idea for a Memento: This chick behind me made a book on Shutterfly with all the authors she wanted to stalk at the signings she was going to with room for them to sign!  How cool is that?!!???!
Most Inventive Swag:  No joke- water.  Samantha Chase had a basket full of water bottles that came in handy for the wait for Harper Sloan!
Best Entourage: Jenn Foor's daughter hunted me down after I left my fabric marker at their table.  She walked EVERY ISLE just to make sure I got it back.  Thanks S!!
Biggest Disappointment: Madeline Sheehan wasn't able to attend due to weather!  Fucking weather...
Funniest Comment by a Fellow Person in Line: When a certain male author advised the chick behind me that he had done 'extensive personal research' for the information in his novel... Her response?  'That must have been some really expensive 'research' for you to charge $8.99 for a kindle book.'  My sister and I almost DIED! He took it in stride and moved on down the line.  You gotta love chicks from Long Island!
Biggest Surprise of the Event (for me, at least): M.S. Willis and Lily White are one and the same!
Most Fashionable: Erin Noelle had the cutest outfit on, Alessandra Torre wins for sexiest shoes ever.
Best Feeling: When I walked up to a bunch of tables wearing my KTB's Bitch teeshirt and they immediately knew that I was Sassy Sara (without having to turn around!!).  Almost. Died.
Most Awkward: Having to explain that no, I am not with Becca or any of the other 'Bibliophiles' out there... It's just Kayla since she's the BEST Bibliophile around :)
Dirtiest Quilt Square Inscription: (I know, you're shocked...)

Honorable Mentions:

Sweetest Quilt Block:

Honorable Mentions:

Best Photo-Bomb:

All the authors were so extremely kind and generous.  If you have the chance to go to an event, do it.  Getting a hotel room so you can hang out with other authors is recommended but not necessary.  You can easily go to an event and pay for nothing but the cost of the ticket (if there is one) and transportation which is well worth it in my opinion.  Thank you to all my fellow line waiters and bloggers that made my first signing such a wonderful and memorable event.
If you're going to be in Boston, I'll see you there!

Sassy Sara's Review of Fake by Jade Jamison

Wow...

What is it about Jade C Jamison's writing that seems to trigger insomnia?  Two nights in a row I had no sleep because my stomach was in knots and adrenaline was coursing through my veins making me feel like I had 10 cups of coffee in a single sitting.  As you should all know by now, Nicki is what brought me to Jade so when I heard this book was being released there was no way I was going to miss the opportunity to get you hooked!

I have had this book on countdown since Jade released a date and sometimes that can be a bad thing. Will the plot work? Will I still love these characters as much as I once did? Will she put a wedge in my favorite couple? Well, I can say without any hesitation that this book was well worth the wait. I was sucked right back into the world of Nicki Sosebee and all her friends so quickly that I felt like I had never left. Sean, Jesse, Jillian and Brandy all remain devoted fixtures in Nicki's life in the small Colorado town of Winchester. There are some new characters that bring a new plot twist as well as some returning characters like the sarcastic cop, Nathan Wright, and her lovable Winchester Tribune boss, Neil.  Sean makes her heart beat out of her chest just by staring into her eyes so when he starts to seem distracted and won't tell her what's going on, she starts to worry.  Sean has never been the type to readily share his feelings with anyone so is this all in her mind or has he been drinking more and working later than normal?

When Sean's behavior starts to worry her, she turns to the one man she can trust aside from Sean who also happens to be her ex, Jesse.  His feelings for her are no secret to anyone but will he make a move on his best friend's girl?  More importantly, will she LET him?  Will Nicki's relationship with Sean stand the test of time and his strong relationship with Jesse? My friends and I have our theory on where this story will go because there were just as many questions answered as asked.  If you have read ANY of my reviews for Jade, you should know by now that I am 100% Team Sean.  Hands down.  To know that there could be conflict for him in this book just about made me run screaming from reading it.  Fortunately, Jade is so fucking awesome that after a while you eventually start CRAVING the conflict.

Jade said that she is hoping to have another Nicki book out before the end of the year (fingers crossed!!) so we should be able to find out more about our lovable Winchester mob in a few months!  All I can really say for certain is that there's a storm brewing in Winchester.
Make sure you brace yourself!

ML Steinbrunn Edition: Dare to Tell the Truth with Kayla the Bibliophile

Let’s start with a little foreplay…
What would you say is the most embarrassing thing you have done or had done to you?

Wow, I’m the clumsiest, foot-in-mouth adult that has ever hit this planet, so this is difficult to narrow it down. The most far reaching is probably when I was delivering my high school valedictorian speech. I lost my place, got flustered, and started hysterically laughing. Then to make it worse, I get waaaaay to close to the microphone and announce to the auditorium, “My bad.” Yeah, I looked super smart; I did wonders for the reputation of our youth.
Craziest Fan moment?

I haven’t had one yet.
Pick one!

Favorite book and/or author?

I love everything Jane Austen. My favorite is Pride and Prejudice.
Import or Muscle car?

Muscle car, no question.
Favorite song and/or musician?

I have a very eclectic taste in music. My I-pod is seriously bi-polar and I change favorite songs like I change underwear. However, a musician that I can always jam out to is Janis Joplin. She was such a cool rocker chick…gotta love some Bobby McGee.
White, Dark or Milk Chocolate?

Ummm, just chocolate. I will eat any of it. It must remain hidden from me at all times, no matter the flavor, or it will be decimated.
Sam or Dean Winchester?

DEAN!!
Commando, Boxers or Briefs?

Option D. I prefer boxer briefs.
Damon or Stephan Salvatore?

Stephan!
Wine or Mixed drink?

Can I alternate?
Coke or Pepsi?

Dr. Pepper
Biker boy or Rocker dude?

Rockers…I prefer drummers and guitarist though.
Do you believe in vampires?

Interview with a Vampire made me desperately want to believe Brad Pitt was in search of snack only I could provide.
If you could have a super power what power would you pick?

I would want to have magical powers and attend Hogwarts. However, I want to be able to use my powers around muggles.
What would you do with your super power if you had it?

I would make sure I had all of the chocolate I ever wanted but I would never gain any weight. Also,  I want a trunk filled with invisibility cloaks so I could spy on other people…ultimate people watching.
Would you abuse your super power? How?

I’m sure I would get into some kind of trouble and be booted out of the school of witchcraft and wizardry.
Enough foreplay, let’s get it on!

Tell us about your 1st time!
I had just turned seventeen and I was getting ready to start my senior year. I didn’t want to go to college as a virgin, so my sexual clock was ticking, I guess you would say. I really liked the guy even though we had only met a few weeks before and we actually ended up dating for a year after and went to college together. (We broke up as soon as we got there though…way to go me lol) His parents were out of town and we took advantage of their house. It was nice, not the horror story you read about or hear that others have had.

Screamer, moaner or silent?
Depends on how good he’s doing.

Whips or chains?
Paddles

What is your favorite alcoholic beverage?
Margaritas with extra salt are my favorite. However, I’m a major light weight. I once had to be helped out of the booth and to the car at Bennigans after only one.

Do you ever leave home without panties on?
I’m a big opponent of undies. I never wear them with yoga pants no matter where I’m going and they are the first things to go when I get home every day, if I had to wear them.

Have you ever had sex while at work (any job)? If so, where?
No.

What is the strangest place you ever had sex?

In the bed of a pickup in the middle of a pasture, which wasn’t so bad until the police showed up.
What turns you on more, reading a sexual story, watching a porn or listening to sex?

While I love my naughty books, I have to admit I’m more of a guy in this regard. Pornhub and spankwire are bookmarked on my pornpad.
What profession do you find the most arousing sexually?

I love men in suits and military officers.
Does size matter?

I’ve had samplings from the spectrum, and as much as I want to be nice to the opposite gender about this topic, yes, size matters. If you happen to be lacking in the area, my best suggestion is to bone up on other skills to compensate, and I don’t mean buy an imported car.
Do you or have you ever had a “cop” fantasy?

My husband is a police officer, so I better say yes.
Do you or have you ever had a “Delivery Guy” or “Service Man” fantasy?

No, but I love men in military uniforms.
If you were on a bus and got a glimpse up a pantiless girl’s skirt would you keep looking?

After I laugh/snorted and took another peek I would probably share the news with the person riding with me so that they can peek and laugh.
What is the strangest sexual experience you’ve had?

So the next few questions, I’ll have to refer to college (pre-husband days) because I’ve been with my husband since my freshman year of college.
Let’s just say it’s never good when you need your friends to fill in the blanks of the evening before when you’ve too much alcohol.

Funniest sexual experience you've ever had?
I went on a date with a guy who had a horrible under bite and lisp. We went to see Austin Powers at the theater and then just hung out afterward. He was trying to be smooth and asked if we could get our mojo on. I couldn’t help but laugh and I told him I need to get going. It was our first and last date.

Most embarrassing sexual experience?
My husband’s college roommate walked in on us, lights on, ass in air. He is the shiest, quietest guy in the world! He tells us, “I guess you opened an early Easter present.” It was pretty hard walking out of that room afterward.

Also, the mentioning of police in a previous question, yeah that was pretty embarrassing.
Dominant or Submissive?

Submissive
A fantasy you haven't fulfilled yet?

I haven’t had a romp in the ocean. As long as the jellyfish didn’t want to partake, I would think it would be a good time. Other than that, of course I want to be swept away by some terribly attractive, suave billionaire who wants to spoil me rotten and fulfill every one of my desires on a whim.
Your stand on sex toys?

Stand, sit, whatever you need to do to enjoy those little devils.

Siiiigh, that was fantastic…how about some pillow talk?

What would you do if you could be a guy for a day?
I would spend a lot of time rubbing my balls. They seem to be every man’s worry stones and I would want to fit in with the pack.

How would you describe yourself so that someone could pick you out?
I’m extremely short, petite with hair (the color and length change regularly). I’m very shy in public situations and when first meeting someone. However, once I’m comfortable, it’s like a light switch goes off. I become bubbly with a smartass comment for everything…but in a nice way.

What's the last thought in your head that involved someone you like?
Did that really just happen?

What is a question you want me to ask you?
Jammies, lingerie, or nude?

What is a question you refuse to answer?
I haven’t come across something that I wouldn’t answer, at least depending on whose asking.

Any tats or piercings? If so, where?
Four tattoos (wrist, stomach, back, and the area in between my arch and ankle). No piercings. I pierced my bellybutton once and it actually pushed its way out until it fell out!! So I avoid piercings.

Biggest turn on?
Confidence and humor

Biggest turn off?
Poor hygiene

Pet peeve?
Disorganization and lack of follow through really bothers me. I’m very type A.

So tell us something nobody knows about you?
I’ve been with my husband since I was 18…the man knows everything about me. I don’t have any secrets, so he has ruined the question.

What did you think while reading these questions?
I laughed a lot. These are certainly thing I would want to know about other people because I’m nosy.

Thank you for answering my naughty questions. Was it as good for you as it was for me?
Did you have anything else you’d like to say before we go?

I appreciate you taking an interest in me and sharing my book. This interview was awesome!
Description
How long would you wait to be with the one that you love? How much of yourself would you hide in order to keep them?

Brooks knows the moment he meets Vivian that he will do whatever it takes to protect her, even if it means leaving her. Running from his past, he spends the next decade trying to forget the shattered heart that he left behind.

Is there any betrayal worth the cost? Are there some sins that cannot be forgiven?

After a lifetime of rebuilding the walls guarding her heart, Vivian confronts the harsh reality that some fortresses are not meant to stand. Winding through a gray fog of disappointment and deceit, she must conquer her deepest fears to accept the love she believes she is too unworthy to have.

As the paths of these two battered hearts cross once more, together they seek redemption for their sins. However, when the secrets of their pasts come knocking on their door, forgiveness and love will be tested, and they will be forced to answer the question: “When the lies run out, will the truth finally set you free?”

Consequences by Aleatha Romig: A Kayla the Bibliophile Review

16100228

Never underestimate the power of a book review. I had just come off my Caleb high after reading CJ Roberts’s Captive in the Dark and Seduced in the Dark and started my hunt for another book in the captive sub-genre. I found a few, and they were okay, but they just didn’t do it for me the way Caleb had. The captors would turn out to be good guys that had been “forced” to kidnap the heroin of the story, or they would fall in love way too quickly without showing the transition in the relationship, the turning point when the captor starts to change from enemy to hero.

I was about to give up, but then I noticed a book that CJ Roberts herself had reviewed. It was a book by a lady with a name I had never heard before. Aleatha Romig. So I read CJ’s review (you can see that review here) and it gave me hope. Had I finally found a book that would make my non-consensual loving little heart beat once again?

Let me begin by saying that the reason it was important for me to lead into this review by mentioning CJ’s part in my find is because I have been sorely disappointed before. A book would be advertised as a super-hot, raunchy, graphic love-scene baring story, but then when it would finally heat up and get to the “good stuff”, it would—what we call in the editing world—fade to black. Making this chick NOT. A. HAPPY. CAMPER! But in CJ’s review, she started out by warning everyone that if they were looking for a book just like hers, with all the explicit, fully-detailed, and  vivid sex, then this was not it. But she went on to say that even though it didn’t, the book was still amazing.

If I had went into Consequences not having been informed about this, I probably would have been my usual pissed-off self when I discover that a book doesn’t have my raunchy nooky in it. BUT WAIT!!! I swallowed down the anxiousness of wanting to read my lady-porn and gave it a go. And man, am I glad I did! There may not be the ten-page-long love scenes describing every detail from their spit swappage to their eye-crossing climax, but you definitely are given enough to know exactly what is going on.

But enough about the smut (GASP!! Yes, I just said that…)

I’ve noticed that since the invention of the e-reader, a ton of the books being released these days have become shorter and shorter. Aleatha gives us a book that is NO JOKE. We’re talking about a book in print-version that could give someone a concussion. Why was I okay with the love scenes not being so explicit? Because the story itself was freaking AWESOME!  Tony is a captor like no other. He’s my favorite kind of man to read—gajillionaire, businessman, hot alpha-male who takes what he wants…and in this case…even if it’s non-consensual. But if you ask Tony what he thinks about something he does to Claire being “non-consensual”, he’d tell you that their contract says otherwise. And if you tried to argue, he’d kick your ass.

And what is a sexyfied, delicious alpha-male good for, unless he has a beautiful and amazing chick to go along with him? Claire is a classically beautiful, sweet, charming, book-loving, smart-as-hell, out-of-work meteorologist who’s paying the bills by bartending. For all she knows, the yummy stranger in the power-suit is just stopping in for a drink after work. Little does she know that he’s already learned every detail about her before he even walks into the bar.

No spoilers from this gal, as always. Just trust me when I tell you, this is a story in the captive sub-genre like no other. Five VERY INTENSE, jaw-dropping, oh-no-the-hell-he-just-di’in, that-lucky-bitch, kidnap-me-PLEASE stars!
